So what is Fashion Feng Shui? Here's the backstory. In 2008, Catherine Sheppard of The Life Styled moved from New York to LA. She had no job set up, but knew that she wanted something different for her life plan than the event marketing path she had kind of fallen into. Right around that time, her mother (a Feng Shui practitioner) told her that she discovered something that sounded up Catherine's alley: Fashion Feng Shui. On a whim, she signed up for the 3-day certification course and flew to Boston for it. During those three days, Sheppard was in her element (no pun intended). She was the youngest person in the class by a good 20 years but was inspired and open to a world of possibilities for her style, career, well being, and that of others.

How does one figure out their style? What makes you different than the rest? It’s a big question. These days, there is so much out there. Pinterest and Instagram are chock full of outfit ideas, and we can all easily find our favorite bloggers to follow. But after a certain point, doesn’t it get a little stale? Sure, there are plenty of cute outfits out there, but sometimes when you go to recreate it, something feels off. What’s REALLY right for YOU? What makes you strut down the street rather than just walk? What makes other people look at you and go “she’s really got something”? Catherine has the answer and is telling all.

HNYPT

212 West 12th Street, Los Angeles, CA, United States

The Venue Report team was recently invited to follow the call of the disco ball by the team at Be Inspired PR. Ummmm, who would pass up on that kind of invitation?! Take us to our happy place please. In addition to the promise of disco tunes, delicious food and jungle vibes, we were extra excited to attend this annual #TasselsandTastemakers event because it was being held at one of our fave Los Angeles venues, HNYPT.

We walked into the stunning and dramatic blank warehouse that is HNYPT ready to rev up our boozing engines. We were promptly greeted with glittery crafted cocktails, suspended palm fronds, neon lava lamps slowly dancing to the music, sparkling fringe hanging from the rafters and tunes blasting from every corner of the sprawling space. This crew of creatives crafted a jaw-dropper one part "Saturday Night Fever" stayin alive and one part bohemian jungle feels.

A Ribbon Workshop Worth Dyeing Over
Alyssa Brown
by Alyssa Brown

If ever you’ve been tasked with sourcing ribbons for bouquets, gift wrapping, attire, or anything else, you know what a challenge it can be to find just the right colors in a fabric that’s display worthy. Silk ribbons are particularly hard to come by, and calligrapher Shasta Bell knows all about that dilemma. While working in invitation design, she realized how tough it was to find beautifully hued silk ribbons, so she started hand dyeing her own using natural botanical and plant-based dyes.

Fast-forward a few handmade dye recipes later, and Miss Bell developed a workshop for lovers of naturally colored silk ribbon to get together and learn her tricks of the trade. Documented by photographer Kristen Dyer (aptly named, no?), the event took place at Fisk Collab in Minneapolis. We can’t believe what vivid colors she was able to create using berries, plants, flowers, avocados, and the like. Jump below for the full scoop on natural dyes from Shasta and to take a peek at the photos by Kristen.
