Venue Setting

The spectacular Hotel Gotham in the heart of mid-town Manchester opened in 2015 to major acclaim, immediately fulfilling its promise as a fun, witty, as well as a little bit naughty, boutique destination. The completely new hotel in the central conservation area of Manchester is set in one of the city's grandest listed buildings - a former bank premises at 100 King Street designed by Edwin Lutyens and referenced in Pevsner's Architectural Guide.

Of the 60 bedrooms, five are inner sanctum suites, along with Honey, the two AA Rosette awarded restaurant, and Brass, the roof-top private bar and members club. The Art Deco building features carvings by local sculptor John Ashton Floyd, and was dubbed the 'King of King Street', due to its grandeur, size and castle-like design. Hotel Gotham now stands as a luxury, 5-star hotel in the heart of Manchester's most upmarket shopping district with boutiques such as Hermès, Whistles, Emporio Armani, Agent Provocateur, Mulberry, Thomas Pink, Reiss and Crombie.

Edwin Lutyens designed the building in 1928, with construction finishing in 1935. It has been painstakingly restored and transformed from it’s previous banking life into the handsome 60-room Hotel Gotham. The Art Deco, in a ‘neoclassical style’, building features Lutyens’ ingenious calculations. The top stage is two-thirds the middle stage which is two-thirds the bottom. The architecture of the ‘King of King Street’ provided natural inspiration for the nostalgic yet decadent design direction. The layout of the bedrooms features wonderful travel trunk-style cocktail cabinets and wardrobes. Burnished metals teamed with dark polished woods and luxurious leather, are coupled with feminine notes of plum and raspberry; while soft velvet and faux fur are used liberally. Subtle references are made to the banking past with moneybag style laundry bags and ingot toiletry displays.

Internal restoration included the reincarnation of the main staircase, the brass handrail, its balustrades, mouldings and terrazzo flooring. The Art Deco influence can be seen in the striking bespoke geometric carpets running throughout the corridors & bedrooms. Beautifully rich wall finishes of metal, wood, leather and ceramic are used extensively and provide a richness and decadence that evoke emotions and moods of the past.

Since opening its doors, Hotel Gotham has been met critical and public acclaim, picking up a number of awards including “The Coolest Boutique Hotel Award” at the Cool Venue Awards, as well as “Outstanding New Hotel” at the Independent Hotel Show Awards. In addition, it has been listed amongst Conde Nast Traveller’s “2016 Hot List”, which lines up the 60 best new hotels in the world, as well as being the only hotel in the UK to feature in Escapism magazine’s “Hip Hotel” roster.
