Venue Setting

In 1903, Fred and Ida Stearns claimed the untamed territory on the Colorado River that is now Sorrel River Ranch, as their homestead. Fred used a single plow horse to develop the high desert valley into enough farmland to feed his family and livestock. The original two-room farmhouse has been preserved and still stands by the resort’s organic herb garden. In 1947, the farm was sold to Bill and Lillian Boulden who continued the family farm tradition as Boulden Cattle Ranch. In 1994, former bass guitarist for Rick Springfield, Robbie Levin, drove through the rustic metal gates of Boulden Cattle Ranch and was awestruck by the setting and spectacular views. Levin purchased the land from the Boulden’s and began developing the property that officially opened as Sorrel River Ranch in 1999. Elizabeth Rad purchased the property in 2008 and is the current owner. The name “Sorrel” originated from the specific red rust color found in American Quarter horses which is identical to the color of the scenic red rock mesas surrounding the property. The property’s 160 acres are surrounded by thousands of acres of untouched, pristine, BLM property in close proximity to the La Sal Mountain Range. Nestled on 160 acres along the banks of the Colorado River amidst the majestic red rocks of Moab, Utah, the Four Star Sorrel River Ranch is renowned for its exclusive destination as the adventure capital of the American Southwest. The full-service resort and spa is located a short distance from Moab Canyonlands Airport (approximately 30 miles) and about 90 miles from Walker Field Airport in Grand Junction, CO.

Venue Features
The Scene:
Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa is an upscale retreat in the heart of a gorgeous, red rock wilderness. Nestled against the banks of the Colorado River, 17 miles up a sweeping canyon from Moab, Utah, our 240-acre ranch is located in the adventure capital of the West. Our Moab resort is where luxury meets adventure. We offer four-star service and luxurious accommodations – including a lavish, therapeutic spa; gourmet, farm-to-table restaurants; riverside pool with service; and large, private, riverside cabins luxuriously appointed with Old-West chic décor – that are designed to delight both your senses and your soul. Those looking for adventure will delight in our guided horseback riding tours, hiking, tennis, or exploring the beautiful country.
Accommodations at our Moab, Utah resort offer a pleasing balance between rustic and luxurious. Rather than a standard and simple room, you’ll enjoy a stay in a charming log cabin with all the modern amenities you expect and deserve. Authentic, gorgeous, and 100% Old West, our cabins offer an entirely fresh take on serious comfort. The beds are opulent, pine, handcrafted four-posters with a real pair of steer horns joined by handcrafted leather hung above – you’ll love crawling into these beds and falling asleep after a day of adventures. Because we delight in the details, you’ll find additional finishing touches like artsy, barbed wire chandeliers, a Wild West Show poster in the kitchen, and a lariat hanging above the couch. This will be a surprising switch from the interior decorating tastes to be found in most luxury hotels.
Standout Venue Features:
Unlike the nearby, rugged Utah terrain, the tranquil Colorado River spa provides a serene escape from the daily stresses of everyday life. Surrounded by calming sounds, aromatic herbs, and beautiful views of the Colorado River from picture windows, our boutique spa offers a wide range of specialized massages, pedicures, manicures, and facials for both men and women. Many of the rejuvenating treatments we offer are inspired by the natural environment of southern Utah, including our Bourbon Cowboy, Slick Rock Massage, Colorado River Stone Massage, and stimulating Herbal Wrap.
Extra Perks:
Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa is famous for its horses and authentic, friendly wranglers. Choose from three different guided trail rides ranging from one-and-a-half to three hours each. Ride across the ranch and then meander through the Stearns Wash to unbelievable views of Professor Valley, La Sal mountains, and infamous ridges from atop the hills. The Ida Gulch Ride is our most popular horseback ride, recommended for riders of any ability level. We even have ponies for the kids.
Awards & Notables Sorrel River Ranch doesn’t just look like a scene from the movies – the area surrounding the ranch has actually been in the movies on many occasions throughout the years. Hollywood has been visiting Moab to find scenic landscapes and beautiful backdrops since 1949, resulting in some of the silver screen’s most epic and enduring images. From John Wayne westerns like Rio Grande and The Comancheros to action flicks like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Breakdown to 2010 Academy Award nominee 127 Hours, some of film’s most timeless moments have happened in the scenic hills surrounding Sorrel River Ranch. We have been featured in countless magazines, TV shows, commercials, catalog photo shoots. Most recently, Conde Nast Traveller featured us in their spring publication.
