Venue Setting

The Beach Lodge is a newly renovated 1971 modified A-frame house in Hollywood Beach, a community nestled between Malibu and Santa Barbara. The 3 bedroom, 2 bath home offers numerous amenities, unobstructed views of the ocean and Channel Islands, and is steps away from the sand.

The Beach Lodge has a 2 car garage with laundry facilities at street level. The sleeping quarters on the second level consist of 3 bedrooms that sleep six and 1 bathroom with a soaking tub. Two of the bedrooms have peek-a-boo views of the ocean and access to their own private balcony. The third level living quarters features a light-filled open floor plan made up of the kitchen, dining room, living room and second bathroom. The living room sofa has a queen size pull out bed that provides additional sleeping for up to 2 people. A large balcony in the back provides outdoor space for relaxing, while the balcony in the front provides an unobstructed view of the ocean that will leave you speechless. The beach-facing balcony has a built-in table that offers a place for you to enjoy a meal or have your morning coffee, or just relax and get some sun, while taking in the scenic view. The kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances, and all necessary dinnerware, silverware, stemware, and cookware are provided. The backyard provides an additional gathering space, with an outdoor living room to lounge in, a grill for some BBQing, a picnic table to dine on, and a sand area with a fire pit to hang out around and unwind. If you just want to chill out on the couch or in bed, the Beach Lodge has 3 TVs with AppleTV and 1 smart TV, as well as internet connection with WiFi access. We also have some classic board games in case you need a break from electronics. And if you just want to engross yourself in a book, then we have some of those as well. Ocean breezes usually provide constant coolness to the house, but if not, each of the rooms has it's own remote-controlled fan, and the upstairs living area has 2 of its own ceiling fans.

The Beach Lodge occupies one of the best in-board locations on Ocean Drive, with direct access to a very private beach just a few steps away. Located on the west side of the Channel Island Harbor, Hollywood Beach offers a very broad mile-long strip of white sand, with views of the Channel Islands. You can bask on the sand, surf the Pacific, or play volleyball on sandy courts. The Beach Lodge is walking and biking distance to a number of local favorite restaurants/cafés. The Channel Islands Harbor, which is also walking/biking distance, offers rentals for kayaks, paddle boards, jet skis, boats, and specialty bikes. Every Sunday, it is also home to a Farmers Market that offers live music, local foods, and fresh produce and seafood. There are even opportunities to visit 5 of the islands that make up the Channel Islands for some hiking, kayaking, whale watching, and more. If you want to venture outside of our neighborhood, we are in close proximity to Ventura, Carpenteria, Santa Barbara, Malibu, and Santa Monica...other beach communities that have their own unique offerings. For shopping opportunities, the Camarillo Outlet Mall and The Collection provide a large array of shops, restaurants and also movie theaters. Hollywood Beach offers a very relaxed, vacation pace of living, normally found in small resort towns. Because public parking is very limited, Hollywood Beach offers a feeling of privacy and exclusivity that is rarely seen in beach communities.

The Scene:
The Beach Lodge is located in Hollywood Beach, a mile-long strip of white sand nestled between Malibu and Santa Barbara, California. In the 1920s, the desert-like landscape attracted motion picture productions, using the dunes to star alongside Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks in movies such as “The Sheik” and “Bound in Morocco.” Legendary stars like Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo were drawn to vacation there, and Clark Gable and Rudolph Valentino even bought homes right on the sand. Soon, other Angelenos followed suit, and the area truly became Hollywood by the sea. Since there is very little public parking available, the community does provides a very private feel with easy access to the sand, and very little foot traffic of non-locals.
Design:
The Beach Lodge is a modified a-frame house, built by a man with a love for ships, hence the upside-down boat design. All the interior wood walls and ceiling are painted a semigloss white, to allow for the light to reflect on the surfaces and capture as much brightness as possible. The beams on the upper floor were stripped down and given a clear finish to allow them to stand out against all the white surfaces. Unstained finishes of different wood varieties continued to be the complimentary touches to the all white ceiling and walls. Lines and details were kept simple to allow for the surface textures to really come through and to most of all, not compete with the ocean view and the unique structure of the house.

I originally considered going with an all white beach-y look, but my love of color wouldn’t allow for it. Luckily, the white walls ended up being the perfect backdrop for the touches of color I brought in. I didn’t want the house to get too theme-y/kitschy, so small nautical decorative touches were carefully curated. As far as a design style, I’ve always been drawn to the colors and textures of more global, eclectic pieces like kantha quilts, but at the same time, have always loved the clean and beautiful lines of mid century pieces. The obvious decision thus, was to mix the two styles and hope for a happy accident to take place.

Many of the furnishings, as well as decorative accessories, are vintage and were purchased from flea markets and antique stores in the LA and Ventura county. We wanted these to add history to the house and a sense of comfort to the home. The items that are new provide modern amenities and most share the simple, clean aesthetics found in mid century designs. These modern touches include stainless steel appliances, white quartz countertops, natural maple kitchen cabinets, washer and dryer, soaking tub, flat screen TVs equipped with appleTV, and of course, WiFi connection.
Standout Venue Features:
Unlike most of the inboard homes on our street, we have unobstructed ocean and island views from our living quarters. Most only provide peek-a-boo views or require you to go out into a rooftop deck or balcony to see the ocean.
Extra Perks:
Aside from being fully furnished, the Beach Lodge also provides all the necessities to enjoy a day at the beach which include beach towels, chairs, blankets, and umbrella. For fun activities, we have a volleyball, Nerf football, frisbee, 2 boogie boards and 4 bikes.

The Beach Lodge

4112 Ocean Drive, Oxnard, CA, United States

Nothing good ever comes easy. It's a simple fact hard work pays off and without it, you miss that glorious sense of accomplishment oft copied but never really duplicated.  It takes a special person indeed to see potential in what others overlook.  The sparkling turquoise beauty you see below wasn't always as shiny and polished as it is now, at least not when Tiffany Caliva-Talledo a graphic and motion designer living in Ventura County, CA purchased it. She runs a small motion design company called FarmHand Studios and was looking for a diamond in the rough to renovate.

Her story of this beautiful, little beach house's discovery and subsequent transformation is an inspiration not only to us design & gathering gurus, but maybe it's a lovely lesson for all of us to dig a little deeper, look a little closer and take a second glance at something (or even someone?) we would normally pass right by.  As for it's current state, we'd say this beach house is picture-perfect for a bohemian beach bachelorette party, gorgeous girls getaway or sweet weekend escape. It's almost booked through 2016 so get to gathering!
