Thomas Jefferson – epicurean, intellectual, farmer and inventor – has inspired every aspect of The Jefferson hotel, located in downtown Washington, DC, permeating its design and culture. The best of Jefferson is showcased throughout our historic hotel, from the literal to the evocative, in original documents and Jeffersonian motifs showcased throughout, as well as our assortment of top restaurants.

• Guest accommodations feature draperies fashioned from three original toile patterns inspired by the textiles and artifacts Jefferson brought back from Paris to enhance his beloved Monticello – which also inspired the fragrance of our customized bathroom amenities.
  
  Plume, offering culinary creations inspired by Monticello's gardens to blend European tradition with American innovation.
  Quill, where the parquet flooring is recreated from Jefferson's design for Monticello's main salon. A collection of 18th-century maps on the walls of Quill follows Jefferson's journey through the wine regions of France, Germany and Italy.
  
  The Book Room, inspired by Jefferson's own Book Room at Monticello offering an author’s corner designated for authors in residence who dedicate a copy of their book for placement amongst our shelves.
  
  The Petite Spa at The Jefferson, where Jefferson's interest in herbs and agriculture is reflected in the vinotherapy treatments. The Spa also utilizes herbs and botanicals reflective of those grown at Monticello in Jefferson’s day.

In 1923, the nation had a new president in Calvin Coolidge, and Washington, DC welcomed a new luxury residential building: The Jefferson Apartment, a Beaux Arts design by Jules Henri de Sibour that was the address of choice for savvy Washingtonians. 1955 saw the apartment’s conversion into a historic Washington, DC hotel, and The Jefferson was born.

The combined creative forces of some of the world’s finest architectural, design and construction firms brought Washington, DC’s venerable and beloved hotel into the 21st Century with a makeover that is both distinctly European and Washingtonian in style and features an abundance of rich, historical influences of the hotel’s namesake, Thomas Jefferson. The top-to-bottom, two-year hotel renovation infused modern-day elegance and convenience into the stately and magnificent Beaux Arts framework.

Careful restoration of the large, original lobby skylight accompanied such important renovations as a state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen, a sleek and elegant spa and new, sumptuously-appointed specialty room and suite accommodations. Today, The Jefferson’s sizeable collection of antiques, historic artwork and original, signed documents coexist alongside the best of modern-day amenities, encouraging our guests to escape the fast pace of the modern world or connect with it as they choose.

The Renovation
In August 2009, The Jefferson re-emerged as the Washington, DC’s finest small historic hotel. The top-to-bottom renovation included:

• Upgrades to all 95 guestrooms, the common areas, meeting space, and restaurants.
  The addition of two specialty suites
  The exciting discovery of a magnificent 1923 skylight in the lobby. Covered for decades, it now allows natural light to stream into The Greenhouse
  Beloved antiques, period artifacts, documents signed by Thomas Jefferson and historic vintage books once again grace the guest rooms and suites and public spaces.

The Jefferson’s private dining room was inspired by Thomas Jefferson's passion for wine and can host up to 20 for rehearsal dinners and small gatherings. Enjoy an intimate space with walls lined by wine display cabinets and private wine lockers.

THE PARLOR BOARDROOM

The Parlor Boardroom is an impressive meeting space designed for up to 26 Participants around a grand wood polished table crowned by tall taper-like chandeliers.

THE BOOK ROOM

This library was inspired by Thomas Jefferson's love of literature. Here, surrounded by leather-bound books on Jeffersonian subjects, guests can slip into this cozy, 500-square-foot space accommodating special receptions for up to 30 guests.

THE GALLATIN ROOM

Named after Albert Gallatin, Thomas Jefferson's close friend and Secretary of the Treasury, this is our largest meeting and private event venue. The Gallatin Room can accommodate up to 80 guests for standing receptions or 46 guests for a seated affair. The room can also be partitioned into two rooms - the East and West Gallatin - for smaller groups.
