Venue Setting

Ideally situated just three blocks from the French Quarter, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is the best New Orleans boutique hotel for art lovers and cultural explorers.

Rooted in NOLA's past, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is the latest incarnation of a building with a rich, storied history. Once upon a time, our lobby was a bustling warehouse that served the Port of New Orleans with an impressive array of goods including canvas, rope, and tobacco.

Today, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is a fine boutique hotel that celebrates New Orleans art and culture. Our walls are covered in art, from the Where Y'Art annex located just off our lobby to the art from students of the Where Y’Art exhibition extension to the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, the city's legendary tuition-free high school of the arts, that can be found found in all our guestrooms. Our lobby also features a rotating art gallery with original works by NOCCA students, alumni and faculty. And we've gone back to our roots supplying travelers with a lobby Chandlery featuring works by New Orleans' top makers and creators.

Want an extra-plush pillow or or some spiritual guidance? Our signature amenities have you covered. We also have an extensive pets welcome policy. Don't let your four-legged friend miss out on pampering in the Big Easy! And when it's time to grab a bite yourself, try dining at Compére Lapin for delicious cuisine by Top Chef Nina Compton some of New Orleans' best cocktails, or Tout La for coffee and pastries.

If you're visiting with friends for a special occasion, we offer group rates. And, we have partnered with two of the city’s best events spaces - Race & Religious and The Chicory - to hold your party or meeting.

The Scene:

An unconventionally historic New Orleans hotel, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery the latest incarnation of a building that began its life in 1854 as a warehouse serving the Port of New Orleans. Built in the heart of New Orleans’ bustling port district just steps from the French Quarter, it served as a coffee warehouse before being purchased by E.J. Hart & Company who operated a chandlery, or general wholesale business, trading in everything sailing ships needed to stock their voyages – from canvas and rope to paper, tobacco and patent medicines.

Prior to the turn of the 20th century when New Orleans renumbered its street addresses, the building’s address was 77 Tchoupitoulas Street. In a nod to this heritage, a reference to the role hotels serve in provisioning modern travelers and a tribute to the neighborhood’s artistic roots, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery takes its name from this original address. Starting with humble origins in New Orleans’ bustling port district, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery has undergone a transformation to create the one of the most exciting and best new hotels in New Orleans.

Design:

It is our immense honor to partner with the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts – a tuition-free high school founded by artists, educators and community activists that offers students from nine parishes around New Orleans intensive academic and arts instruction. NOCCA boasts a faculty rich with working artists and an illustrious roster of alumni that includes Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr., Terence Blanchard and many more.

Recognizing a shared passion for the arts and a unique opportunity to showcase the work being done at the school, our aim at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is to be a NOCCA outpost in the Warehouse Arts District and help raise awareness for their mission.

To that end, student painters, printmakers, photographers, designers, collage and graphic artists from NOCCA’s upper level visual arts program were invited to submit works to be featured in the guestrooms at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery. Works by six students were selected to be purchased, reproduced and displayed in the hotel.

Our guestrooms also feature copies of UMBRA, the annual publication created by the school’s creative writing students. Purchase a copy, take it home and help support NOCCA.

In our lobby, you’ll also find a NOCCA gallery sharing space with the Chandlery. This gallery features the work of students, faculty and alumni. The pieces on display rotate on a regular basis and are for sale. When you buy a piece, proceeds go directly to the artist.

Want more NOCCA? Head to 5 Press Street, between Chartres and Royal Streets, where the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood meets the Bywater. Here you’ll find Press Street Station cafe, the 5Press Gallery and the Press Street Gardens – great projects of the NOCCA Institute that raise funds to support the school.

Food, Restaurants, Cafes:

Shedding a new light on dining in the Warehouse Arts District, Chef Nina Compton’s Compère Lapin accentuates the beautiful and indigenous ingredients of the Gulf while melding the flavors of Compton’s Caribbean upbringing with her love of French and Italian Cuisine.

Compère Lapin [pronounced kom-pare la-pan and translated to “brother rabbit” draws inspiration from Compton’s childhood in St. Lucia where she read traditional Caribbean folktales featuring a mischievous rabbit named Compère Lapin. Embracing the story’s themes of exploration and play, the restaurant features an inventive menu that celebrates Compton’s roots and the unparalleled flavors of New Orleans.
