- The Scene:
Whitehall is in the the historic de Waal Block, sitting in one of Calgary’s most beloved neighbourhoods - Bridgeland. The building owners won the Lion Award for best restoration, after spending over $1 million restoring the building and maintaining original finishes, including hardwood floors and pressed tin ceilings.
Every effort has been made to preserver the historic integrity of the building, including the use of industrial piping to create Whitehall’s comfortable 12-seat bar. The counter at the bar is extra wide to accommodate casual, full-service dining. In 2016, the basement of Whitehall will be transformed into a wine cellar and private dining area.
- Design:
The Whitehall Restaurant space is literally two rectangular ‘white halls,’ the lower dining room / bar and “The Other Room” (aptly named for private dining room that Sir Winston Churchill founded after being banished from the main dining room) which is up two stairs and open to the kitchen.
The Palace of Whitehall was the main residence of the English monarchs in London from 1530 until 1698 until it was devastated by fire. It was the largest palace in Europe at the time with over 1500 rooms (even larger than the Vatican or Versailles).
Today, Whitehall is the main thoroughfare and commonly used name for a community in the City of Westminster. It runs from the original Charring Cross Station at the southern end of Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square, and is recognized as the centre of ‘Her Majesty’s Government,’ home to many of the current administrative buildings of the UK government.
Whitehall is a new addition to Calgary's dining scene and within weeks was awarded one of Calgary's Top 3 New Restaurants by local reviewer John Gilchrist.
