2018's Hottest New Restaurant Openings Across the Globe

A few weeks ago, I brought you this years hottest new venue openings and then the hottest new hotels after that. Now, the third installment of this series is the hottest new restaurant openings of this year – which I'm thrilled to share with you. Why? Food is the centerpiece of gatherings, conversation and celebrations. In this guide, you'll find a range of restaurants from fast casual to fine dining alongside bespoke group dining experiences and eateries helmed by Michelin starred chefs. There’s a little something for every appetite on this list. Each of these special places have been built with passion, a story and a lot of thought about what will make you, the diner, have a culinary experience to remember.
Raleigh’s Moore Square Park gained a community hub last year with the opening of Brewery Bhavana. Part brewery, part dim sum restaurant, part flower shop, and part bookstore, it’s the ultimate mash-up of locavorism under one (v. high atrium) ceiling.
“You’re a stranger here but once.” This sweet sentiment leads you into Anvil Hotel’s onsite Italian trattoria, Glorietta, and sets the scene for hearty handmade pastas, beef grilled to perfection and farm-fresh sides big enough to share in a cozy and familiar setting.
Unsurprisingly, Melbourne is home to a new, attention grabbing restaurant – Longsong. Focused on collaborating with primary producers, brewers, mixers and makers, be sure to book The Loft, a mezzanine overlooking the entire restaurant accommodating 32 people seated and 40 people for a cocktail style event.
Precious few restaurants have been more talked about in the Austin food scene than 2017’s Kemuri Tatsu-Ya. The Texan spin on a traditional izakaya brings a menu that spans from octopus fritters topped with Texan chili to BBQ eel and spicy pork ribs with Gochujang pepper rub.
Pretty in so much pink, Amsterdam’s Mama Kelly has a self-professed uncomplicated menu offering either chicken or lobster, and that’s it. You’ll appreciate this simplified menu when your group of 8+ takes over the dining room or a few booths and is preoccupied with the decor (read: no time for menu scouring).
Michelin-starred chef John Fraser has struck restaurant gold again with his 2017 space The Loyal in Manhattan’s West Village. An homage of sorts to the American brasserie, this is one spot where you’ll want to become a regular.
Now officially open (and truly an all-day spot), Brothers and Sisters inside The LINE D.C. is rebelling against tradition and embracing it’s multicultural identity thanks to Erik Bruner-Yang and his talented team, helmed by Todd Thrasher, Pichet Ong, Harper McClure, Neil Dundee and Colin Sugalski.
Colorful, retro and even a bit playful, The Lobster Club in NYC’s Seagram Building opened in November. Every bit the Japanese brasserie concept restaurant and lounge space it promised, this is one sassy space to grab a drink and a delicious meal.
New York’s West Village gained a new Italian-American haunt last fall with husband and wife duo Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli running the show. Don Angie’s menu features wonders like octopus puttanesca and stuffed garlic flatbread.
The latest restaurant addition to celeb chef David Chang’s collection, Majordomo is a vast industrial space that’s sure to be filled with the smells and sounds of a bustling restaurant any day now. Located just north of LA’s Chinatown, the Korean-meets-Californian fare will be meat-heavy with lots of bing and noodles.
From the San Francisco based team behind Marlowe, Park Tavern, the Cavalier, Marianne’s, and Leo’s Oyster Bar, Petit Marlow opened last year to great acclaim. Set in SoMa, this sweet Parisian style spot is one to look out for, especially if you’re into winemaker dinners and oyster happy hours.
Focused on bringing back the quality of the ancient bread baking tradition, Berberé’s second Milan location opened last October in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Get ready to fall fast in love with this slow rising dough.
Clean lines, a muted palette and minimal decor set the stage for “The Neighbor” where pairs create the ultimate culinary experience: the chef and the sommelier as well as the coordinator and the calculator. A comforting yet inventive menu completes the friendly, familiar experience.
This market, bakery, juice bar, restaurant, cooking school and an event hall in Mexico is woven together by interconnecting collages of painted tiles. Bringing Mexican and Italian (specifically, Rome and Saltillo) influences together, this artistic space is Saltillo’s newest community hub.
London gained a city-side Vinoteca in October and it’s a stunner of a space, what with the dark wood features and bright tiling throughout. One of six locations, the wine bar atmosphere presents Bloomberg Arcade as an easy place to grab a glass of wine and a bite.
Philly’s local social club dates back about a hundred years and recently reopened under a new owner (hint: he knew a guy). It’s a members-only spot, but you’ll want to be sure you snatch up a membership if you’re into old school Italian nostalgia and family recipes.
Coffee + Tacos? Yes, please! New to the O4W area last fall, you will find Muchacho conveniently located off the Atlanta Beltline – not far from big sister, Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall. Here you will find full counter service and modern west coast vibes (think Venice Beach circa 1970) where you can get your fill of tacos, toasts, grain bowls, poke, and more.
Widely praised as one of San Francisco’s best new restaurants of 2017, a Mano in Hayes Valley is crushing the handmade pasta scene. The space is gorgeous, sun-filled and easy to hang around for a few hours while sipping delicious wines and filling up on everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure.
Atlanta’s new Krog Street Market gem, Bar Mercado, pulls inspiration from the markets of Madrid and delivers high-class style and delicious tapas to the ATL. Opened last fall, the space is as rich in ambience as the food is in flavor.
Opened at the end of last year, Barcelona’s El Nacional is decidedly un-touristy and a local favorite. Perfect for tapas, pre-dinner drinks and everything in-between, this multifaceted space is home to four bars (drinks AND oysters, that is) and four eateries. Now just to choose which ones…
San Francisco’s Chinatown got a massive Chinese food, drink and retail emporium last year at China Live. Upstairs you’ll find an old-world, fine dining restaurant called Eight Tables by George Chen with a tasting menu of Chinese cuisine that’s practically guaranteed to impress.
Head inside the Jane Hotel’s latest hotspot and you’ll find a cool, casual dining hub that’s open all day and late into the night on weekends. Known as Old Rose, this little West Village eatery serves up Italian fare in a stylish setup that’s full of sunshine.
This all day Italian experience in the heart of Singapore wants to bring you in for imported cheese and warm, flaky pastries by day and contemporary pastas and cocktails by night. Paired with the sleek yet comfortable interiors and you have yourself quite the culinary destination.
Grand Cayman’s star opening of 2017, Anchor & Den does diversity and does it well. Depending on the time of day, you might find a juice bar, gelato stand, crêperie, raw bar, or sushi bar alongside a whole menu of comfort foods.
The Ace Hotel brand is known for having some pretty badass restaurants, and the comfort foods at this DTLA bistro do not disappoint. Newcomer Best Girl arrived on the scene last fall and Ace fans have been freaking out ever since. Pork Shank tubettoni ragu, anyone?
Abbot Kinney’s most talked about restaurant opening of 2017, Felix brings handmade pastas, Neapolitan pizzas and a thoughtful list of cocktails and wines to Venice. The space is equally comforting, with all the ambience of a close friend’s cozy living room.
The warm and welcoming A-frame structure that sits along Austin’s East Cesar Chavez houses a restaurant that does breakfast, brunch and dinner. Pitchfork Pretty opened just last year and serves up delicacies like blue crab and farro porridge alongside classic southern fare like ribs and fried chicken, making it an easy hit with locals and tourists alike.
Noma could easily be described as the Copenhagen restaurant known ‘round the world. Version 2.0 is set to open in February following a bit of a hiatus that included a hefty pop-up in Mexico and worldwide travels for culinary inspiration. Opening just in time for seafood season, we’re looking forward to seeing the new menu as much as the new space.
Recently opened in Platform, Culver City’s trendiest dining and shopping experience, Hayden is an all day cafe and wine bar with a perfectly snackable menu and ‘golden hour’ every day featuring wine and oyster deals.
Enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows with your bitter greens & caramelized onion pizza at Gesso, L.A.’s new artistic neighborhood hang. Chef Doug Miriello's menu draws inspiration from his Jewish and Italian heritage, his East Coast childhood and Southern California cooking experience.
Elske Restaurant (brainchild of Anna Posey and David Posey) officially opened its Chicago doors early last year, and has been rolling in the awards ever since. Awarded one Michelin star in 2017, this is a crew to look out for. Plus, design fans will love the space with its soft, neutral tones and pretty, feminine details.
Another addition leading the way in the “all day restaurant” trend, Philly-based Walnut Street Cafe is a coffee shop, restaurant, bar and private event venue all rolled into one beautiful space. Whatever the reason for your visit may be, make sure you order dessert.
11 blocks from the original world-renowned Pujol, Enrique Olvera has reinvented the restaurant in a secluded bungalow. You won’t find formalities like white tablecloths and stark lighting here, the new Pujol reflects a casual spirit where people are encouraged to come in and relax, complete with an herb garden and open-fire grill. Not to worry, his famous Mole Madre is still on the menu.
The revamp of Austin’s Green Pastures arrived in the form of Mattie’s last spring. Set inside a beautiful old Victorian farmhouse, Mattie’s brings a new Americana style menu and new ownership to a space that’s always been a bit of a culinary destination.
Nestled in the heart of Notting Hill, this fido-friendly restaurant brings the best of Australian cafe culture to London. With clever takes on espresso favorites, like their Liquid Gold Latte featuring turmeric and cinnamon, Farm Girl is the spot to enjoy food that is as beautiful as it is healthy.
An icon of Hong Kong’s fine dining scene, Duddell’s has exported its gorgeous Cantonese restaurant to open a second location in London. An arts-centric environment that replicates its Chinese counterpart, the UK shop is set inside London Bridge’s historic St. Thomas Church.
New to the Westside, Donetto is a contemporary Italian restaurant that uses local and seasonal ingredients to give props to both Tuscan and Southern cuisine. Case in point, the Ripiena- miniature stuffed dumplings filled with rich quail tossed with herbs, garlic, smoked mushrooms and finished with a delicious quail jus. Savory Italian, meet Southern comfort. Yum.
Head to Gowanus if you’re up for a hearty meal of Oaxacan fare chased down with mezcal. The product of a couple of former Union Square Café chefs, Brooklyn’s Claro opened last summer and manages to stand out in a city with no shortage of Mexican restaurants.
The too-cool-for-school vegan restaurant that took NYC by storm just opened a new location over the pond in London’s Covent Garden. You’ll find plant-based versions of London favorites and a neon sign that says “Guac Save the Queen” sure to make its way onto your Instagram feed at any moment.
The stunning contemporary white, grey and gold space at 189 by Dominique Ansel opened in November last year. The nightly dinner menu features golden ticket items like 7-hour slow roasted lamb alongside pull-apart sweet corn milk bread.
The powerhouse team at Hennes & Mauritz (also known as H&M) is expanding its empire beyond clothing to open the juice bar of our dreams in Stockholm. Serving up rainbow veggie platters alongside Scandinavian favorites like cardamom buns and espresso, Pleat is the ultimate spot to get your fika on.

Communal tables, shareable bites and a “spirit of togetherness” make this the spot to gather with your adventure-loving besties for a late-night flavor sojourn.
A recent addition to the iconic Roosevelt Hotel, The Rosy Oyster is attracting rosé and oyster fans from all over Los Angeles. A 35-seater café that makes use of indoors and out, this 1970’s Hollywood glam inspired café is breezy, nostalgic and full of swoon-worthy design.
Inspired by hot air balloons and children’s fantasies, Neobio Shanghai is leading the trend in family-friendly, design-forward spaces. Let your inner child (or actual child) explore as you dine in dreamland.
DTLA’s City Market South got a new Italian fare gem last year with the opening of chef Steve Samson’s Rossoblu. The farmer’s market indoor/outdoor eatery combines locavore ingredients with Bologna cooking traditions.
Located inside Native hostel, Native Kitchen & Bar opened in 2017 and is quite the party hub. Regarding the menu, think burgers, tacos and fried chicken. Regarding the space, think big on design and bigger on booze.
Open as of February 10th at 6a.m. on the dot, 13 Coins is opening in it's new home in Pioneer Square as the 24/7 spot that Seattle knows and loves. Vintage charm runs throughout and guests will love Monday’s buttermilk-fried chicken and fried ice cream, to name a few.
A small hideaway on Canal Street in the Lower East Side that opened late last year, Brigitte offers diners a peek into French-Brazilian cuisine while also inducing a bit of tropical wanderlust. The space is feminine, casual and warm while the food is rich and flavorsome.
Island libations and tropical interiors abound at this breezy Hayes Valley hotspot. Bringing levity to the San Francisco bar scene, Anina is the place to share a punch bowl with friends (may we suggest the “young cuban”?) and dream about warm island breezes while hanging out on the patio.
After two crazy successful locations and the release of an award-winning cookbook, the third outpost of Thai-favorite Night + Market has arrived in Venice (fun fact- “sahm” means three in Thai). Chef Kris Yenbamroong, who Gwyneth Paltrow calls her “noodle bae,” brings the same hot pink walls and vinyl floral-print tablecloths to the new location, where he says he is serving “Cocaine Thai.” Okay then.
Gabriel Stulman, the NYC restaurateur behind favorites like Fedora and Bar Sardine, brings new restaurant Simon & the Whale to Gramercy’s Freehand Hotel. It’s a great spot for groups of any size, including a super cool private dining room, and caters to both travelers and neighborhood regulars.
DTLA’s Broken Shaker rolled onto the scene at Freehand Hotel in September and locals instantly paid attention. Known for incredible cocktails and a simultaneously pumped-up and down-home atmosphere, this spot is so hot right now. The rooftop pool will definitely prove useful come summatime.
With 4 kinds of slow fermented crust, ovens playfully named Dante and Wally and a range of elevated toppings, Zia Lucia is the hottest thing to happen to pizza in West London. Go with friends, share a few pies and let the good times (and wine) flow.
An all-female dream team sets the scene at this punk-rock all-day diner in Austin. Holy Roller does brunch at all hours on West 6th Street, serving up everything from biscuits and pimiento to brisket and fried chicken.
The team behind Rich Table brought a quick-fast dining experience to Hayes Valley in 2017 featuring rotisserie chicken and roasted cauliflower. This isn’t your every chicken though, as these guys undergo a three-day process of brining and drying before arriving at your table.
French-American restaurant Mirabelle in DC opened its doors last spring with former White House chef Frank Ruta running the culinary powerhouse. Expect to hobnob with local politicians and lobbyists, as Mirabelle is just a block from the White House.
Opened by restaurateur Chris Lucas and helmed by star executive chefs K. S. Moon and Shaun Presland, Kisumeis situated in the heart of Flinders Lane with three floors of dining experiences. The sushi bar and restaurant take over the ground floor and basement, while kuro kisumé sits discreetly on the first level. Kuro kisumé, is a true group dining bespoke experience focused on the mastery of omakase with two elegant private dining rooms, a chablis bar and winewall.
Toronto’s plant-based diet fanatics got a whole lot to be excited about with the launching of Virtuous Pie last year. For the savory seekers, pizza pies made exclusively of plant-based ingredients are a hit, while the same ingredient requirement goes for sweet ice creams.
Pizza Loves Emily in Brooklyn became a quick cult favorite operating out of Clinton Hill and now has roots in the West Village too. The new location opened last summer with one of the city’s oldest pizza ovens, dishing up delicious pies on unfussy baking sheets.
Bread lovers assemble - Tartine Manufactory is here to satisfy your deepest carb longings. Stemming from Tartine Bakery’s original outpost in the Mission, Manufactory combines the finest in artisan bread baking with wine, ice cream and all day bites. Pair this with light and bright warehouse feels and you’re going to want to grab your pals and post up here for a while.
Widely touted to have Manhattan’s best burger, 4 Charles in the West Village looks less like a burger joint and more like an underground speakeasy. It’s cave-like, nearly impossible to get into and stays open real late. It’s basically everything a particular set of New Yorkers buzz about.
Opened last fall in DC’s District Wharf, Del Mar delivers a raw bar and seafood towers in a space that’s more modern Mediterranean than any other in town. Fabio and Maria Trabocchi's Spanish seafood restaurant sets a high bar and has created a destination restaurant in the process.
Set to open this winter, Miami’s La Centrale food hall is ready to fulfill your wildest Italian food fantasies. A market featuring fresh pasta and breads, multiple restaurants, gelato in every shade of the rainbow and a prosecco bar are just a few of the highlights in this food hall concept.
Tu is quirky, eclectic, and unlike anything that Charleston has ever seen. A semi-hidden entrance leads you into a bright and modern dining room juxtaposed by an intimate private dining room with historic Charleston home vibes. French refinement and homemade waffles with salted butter caramel await you at the newly-opened Papilles. Snuggled in Paris’ Rochechouart neighborhood, this is the spot for a cozy cup, divine baked goods and your favorite classic novel.
Danny Meyer’s Union Square Café has had a cult following since 1985 and after being closed for almost a year, the restaurant reopened a few blocks away in early 2017. Fortunately, the legacy continues to impress, this time in a roomier setting designed by famed David Rockwell with lots of space for groups, including two bars, a cocktail lounge, a semi-private dining room and another even-more-private room.
Dim the lights and queue the glam vintage vibes of yesteryear. Sharing a wall with sibling restaurant Muchacho (see above), Golden Eagle brings a much different oasis to the Atlanta Beltline. Described by owner Michael Lennox as “a workingman’s tavern in the spirit of mid-century lobby bars and American Legion halls.” With a menu focused on classic retro bites and specialty cocktails, this stunner is a must visit.
The latest project by Michelin-starred chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin has quickly become one of the most sought after social spots in Dubai. The menu captures the true essence of Dubai’s Mediterranean landscape with a nod to their renowned French fare. This vibrant lounge is the epitome of laid-back luxury.
True Laurel, a cocktail bar spinoff from Lazy Bear’s chef David Barzelay and bar director Nicolas Torres, is embracing millennial pink and bringing mid-century modern vibes to the Mission district of San Francisco. Seasonal produce and fresh ingredients are the stars of the drink menu, aligning to create standouts like the “Bae Breez” a pineapple, gin and bay laurel libation.
The Gray Canary is located in The Old Dominick Distillery in the South Main Arts District of Downtown Memphis. You will find stark decor in a renovated warehouse, along with seasoned chefs Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman who are serving up a diverse menu with South American asado cooking that tastes as familiar as a back yard barbecue. Gather your group and start your experience with the raw bar and slowly work your way on to the exciting small plate menu from the wood fire kitchen.
Echo Park’s Tsubaki brings traditional izakaya dining to the east side of LA. What does that mean exactly? It’s Japanese food done really, really well in an atmosphere that’ll have you throwing back saké and beers faster than you can pronounce the name.
Dialogue opened to some serious fanfare back in August and continues to hold the attention of the culinary set of LA. A project by chef Dave Beran, the 18-seat Santa Monica restaurant serves a 22-course tasting menu that’s designed to spark conversation.
Marylebone has introduced a friendly new face to the neighborhood – 31 Below. This cafe by day, bar by night focuses on Mediterranean inspired cuisine with an emphasis on one of a kind cocktails. Need another reason to visit? The indoor garden is sure to not disappoint.
Park Slope favorite Sushi Katsuei hopped the pond last spring to open its second location in the West Village. The casual, light wood filled interior lends a pretty backdrop to a menu where omakase is the main feature.
Located in the Four Seasons at the Seagram Building, 2017’s The Grill is a nod to old school New York glamour. The concept is mid-century chophouse and the dining is about as fine as dining in NYC gets.
Secret’s out – meet the new hidden party dining scene in Koreantown, THE Venue. A place where karaoke dreams come to meet culinary + cocktail mastery. But first you have to find it… The only way to enter is through a private stairwell right off of Wilshire Boulevard.
Located in Chicago’s Hyde Park, Clever Rabbit opened last spring and is a big hit with the nutrition-conscious crowd. The veg-forward menu offers a bit for meat loving diners too, but it’s easy to keep your plate mostly filled with plant foods at this hotspot.
The latest restaurant to hit luxury homewares retail spot ABC Carpet & Home, ABCV offers vegetarians something fresh and innovative to talk about. The Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant touts “high vibration” foods and focuses on highlighting ayurvedic medicine principles throughout the menu. And guess what? It’s pretty darn delicious too.
Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, cheeseburger. Repeat. Chef Edward Lee, who you may recognize from Mind of a Chef, is opening a new spot in Louisville and the focal point is, you guessed it, Whiskey. Offering over 200 types of Whiskey and a seasonally-inspired rotating cheeseburger menu, Whiskey Dry will also serve as a training place for Let’s Empower Employment, chef Lee’s initiative created with the goal of bringing more diversity and equality to the restaurant industry.
In what is said to be Londons first Prosecco bar, Prosecco House is serving specialised wine where people can buy, sample and learn about DOCG Prosecco at the luxury bar. To make the experience even more unique, it is set on the south bank of the River Thames at One Tower Bridge. You will find small bites and tasting menus that one would normally discover in fine hotels making this the perfect spot for meetings and gatherings. For reservations of 10 or more, the venue offers a bespoke group dining menu designed as finger foods. With a love for Veneto region, Prosseco House is offering the classical aperitivo culture in London.
Situated at IFC mall, the newly opened La Rambla by Catalunya is delivering a menu of traditional tapas and mains alongside modern interpretations of Spanish dishes in a sleek setting. Described as Malibu meets Barcelona meets Soho House by co-founder Kevin Poon, guest also have soaring views of Hong Kong’s iconic harbour as the venue backdrop. Chef Ferran Tadeo has crafted a menu divided into three broad sections – tapas, meat and fresh seafood dishes alongside a range of paellas. Guests can also book group dining reservations and events.
This inventive and unexpected menu calls Melbourne home in a space reminiscent of a fine dining restuarant of a bygone era. Frosted lamps, a charming dining room and plenty of brass and marble touches fill the space that happily accommodates parties of 12+. What to order: Molasses chicken, pumpkin, soured cream, pepita with a glass of bubbly.
There is a secret bar below Air’s Champagne Parlor in Greenwich Village where you’ll find a NYC version of the Tokyo record bar experience. And an experience, it sure is. Diners each choose a song that will contribute to the nightly playlist while indulging in a seven-course tasting menu. If you want to show out-of-towners a good time, this is your spot.
Set to open it's doors in Fall of 2018 Ondine Wailea is already receiving quite a bit of buzz. Chefs Anthony Rush and Chris Kajioka’s were recently recognized by the James Beard Awards for Senia, and are now preparing for their next big hit with Ondine. Expect traditional Hawaiian dishes served alongside both beach and garden settings. Word is that you will also be able to plan a group dining experience at the private counter in the kitchen that will seat up to 20 diners.
James Beard nominated chef Margarita Manzke opened Sari Sari Store last year and it’s been a huge hit. Savory rice bowls and Pinoy BBQ are just a couple of highlights at the intimate Filipino outpost in DTLA’s Grand Central Market.
Hudson Yards Food Hall is slated to open sometime in late 2018 and it sounds like it will be worth the wait. With eight Michelin stars (!) between the three chefs behind the concept, including brothers Ferran and Albert Adrià and Jose Andres, the 35,000 square foot food hall will be home to over 100 shops and restaurants (rumor has it David Chang and Thomas Keller have already signed on) plus 4,000 residences and 14 acres of public space. Oh, and a luxury hotel too.
El Jardin is an 8,000+ square foot restaurant coming to San Diego’s Liberty Station this Spring. Complete with a huge outdoor patio that seats over 100, the restaurant will bring to life chef Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins’ take on regional Mexican food traditions through produce grown in an onsite garden and imported seasonal Mexican ingredients.
Miami got lucky, literally, with the launch of this new Asian food hall slash marketplace. There are food vendors serving up all types of delicious Asian cuisine, a convenience store, karaoke bar, retro record store and a theatre designed for private events.

What we don’t know is an opening date, but we’re pulling for the rumors of summer 2018 to be true.
