Somewhere between glamorous excess and spartan backpackers’ minimalism is the Mayan Riviera town of Tulum. More concretely, it’s just down the coast from Playa del Carmen, on the less developed end of the Riviera Maya. And while the coastal hotel zone is where most of the hotels are — you’ve got to admire the clarity of that logic — the western edge of the town center, two miles inland from the beach, is where you’ll find the low-key, affordable, and charmingly mid-century modernist Hotel Tiki Tiki Tulum.

Here, of course, “inland” connotes a jungle-scape in vibrant shocks of green. Totaling just 15 rooms, Tiki Tiki feels as much like a Miami apartment building as it does a boutique hotel, due in no small part to the sizable rooms, the courtyard pool, glass-block windows, perforated surfaces, slatted wood, and a steady diet of blues and greens colluding towards a rewarding aesthetic eyeful. Of course, some rooms come with indoor hammocks, the better to idly thumb through a paperback while drinking in the patterned tilework and floods of equatorial light.

Presenting only fifteen rooms, the Tiki Tiki Hotel offers an exclusive luxury retreat. The site is surrounded by a rich, dense jungle, and the architect welcomes this tropical vegetation into “Designed to honor the beautiful architecture of Palm Springs” the shared areas of the hotel including the central poolside area and bar. Capturing an essence of modernist and Art Deco design, the hotel features decorative ceramic inserts, which Zavala Haag explains were “designed specifically to honor the beautiful architecture of Palm Springs.” Locally sourced wood has been used for the site’s carpentry and furniture, integrating a contemporary take on the region’s traditional design. Stepping stones lead to various access points of the private bedrooms, which reiterate the decorative circular forms present throughout the site.

The scene:: Tiki Tiki is located in the limits of Tulum Town, secluded in the middle of the jungle, it is the perfect location, close from the action but far enough to be in a quiet area away from the noise and chaos of the city life. When you arrive in front of the hotel you are amazed by the beauty of the mid-century façade, behind the long glossy ceramic lattice you can have a sneak peak of the oasis that lies inside. Entering the doors, it's like time has stopped, the retro vibe and the turquoise tiled floor then the bar and our feature infinity swimming pool make you want to jump in the water right away. The rooms are lovely, well designed, super clean, full of light and very comfortable. Each room has a totally different vibe, they all have different floor patterns. Great, nice and affordable, as we say in Mexico, "Bueno, bonito y barato!" The Tiki Tiki is a small cozy and intimate place that makes you feel like at home. Friendly service and friendly vibes.

All the rooms have custom designed tiled floors, with a soft Caribbean turquoise palette and beige natural walls, blend nicely with the green jungle background everywhere surrounding the hotel.
Our Tiki bar is also something that stands out, with a solid Zapote wood plank and bamboo decoration, our qualified bartender serves the most amazing Tiki cocktails with a soothing Motown music playing in the background, a place to socialize and enjoy the tropical vibes.

Here there's no TV, you don't need one, instead, you can read your favorite novel laying in the hammock in each room, have a Nespresso, or simply relax on your balcony or terrace overlooking the jungle.

We only serve a simple but delicious breakfast, we do not have a hot kitchen in the hotel, nor a restaurant; however, an auxiliary benefit of Tiki Tiki’s modest size comes in the attentive, dedicated service in the public spaces. No restaurant (Tulum’s hardly lacking), but the delightfully tropical bar makes for perfect poolside lounging, slinging wickedly fresh cocktails to guests in a pitch-perfect handful of dyed-wicker, splay-legged furnishings. It’s all very relaxed and unhurried. One could get used to this sort of thing.
