- The Scene:
- Istoria’s (istòria from Ancient Greek ἱστορία) concept is influenced by an actual storytelling that originates from the story its owners have created and have kept alive over the years. The transformation the hotel went through aims at creating even more stories and growing as a storybook, where each guest will write their own tale keeping the concept alive and dynamic.
An exceptional mansion right next to the deep blue sea of the Aegean transforms into a boutique retreat, influenced by bright images and locations of the Mediterranean. A medley of different architectural elements and design patterns embraces the unique traditional architecture of Santorini creating a simple, yet eclectic result.
Feelings of intimacy and relaxation are evoked within a unique environment of tranquillity. The design’s goal is for guests to feel they are in a friend’s house, protected within the walls and comforts of a 5-star boutique hotel, with the bright Greek light, as the sole observer. Istoria is your home away from home where you write your own story! - Design:
- The building’s design is influenced by Santorini’s unique traditional architecture. The dominant elements are the arches and the thick masonry, a typical element of the island’s old mansions. On the exterior, the main building materials are the colored plaster, the black volcanic stones and the black sand of the island’s beaches. Most of the interior’s floors are covered in traditional mosaic, while the remaining in forged cement. Building elements of the original estate can be distinguished in the interiors of the 12 suites, such as old wooden roofs and stone columns that were preserved, for the most part, creating a spectacular combination of customary and contemporary features. The small and large-scale alternation in the openings of the building and the elevation differences of the interiors are a true testament to the original estate that makes guests understand what it is to live in an authentic Santorinian mansion. The architect’s goal is to give the impression through the shape, form and materials used that the estate was always there, is a living and true protagonist telling its stories to each guest without words!
The interior design of the rooms and the hotel premises is an eclectic collection of old and new pieces of different styles. The select cosmopolitan furniture and decorative elements are from the Mediterranean and, of course, from island Greece. Volcanic stones, terracotta, colored plaster, wood in natural colors, traditional mosaics in pale tones and black Santorini sand from the beaches of the island are the key elements, embraced by a verdant environment of Greek trees and plants, such as ancient olive trees, herbs, aloe and more. Decorative touches from older civilizations create original images in balanced design spaces of monumental and imposing style. The leading role is taken by the impressively arched openings with a bright sculptural style towards the verandas of each room that remind of the allure one finds in the striking Captain’s houses of the island. Few strictly selected wooden furniture with traditional knitted wool are combined with aged stones and marbles.
