This marvelous meadow is actually a delightful dairy farm, producing aged and artisan cheeses.
Once the country home of a pioneering female horticulturist at the turn of the 20th century, her wonderful work is still considered some of the finest in the land - and will be a matchless mise en scene for your matrimony.

Helena Rutherfurd Ely’s Gardens at Meadowburn Farm: A Hidden Gem of Horticultural History One hundred years ago, any avid gardener in America was likely familiar with the story of Helena Rutherfurd Ely (1858-1920) and her gardens at Meadowburn Farm, in Vernon, New Jersey. Perhaps they read Ely’s first book, A Woman’s Hardy Garden (1903), creating their own gardens based on her detailed practical advice. Perhaps they read of the color arrangements of Ely’s continuously blooming perennial borders in Scribner’s Magazine, or were inspired to replace once fashionable Victorian annual beds with the perennials Ely celebrated. Or, if they were determined to journey the bumpy country roads to Meadowburn Farm, they may have been lucky enough to see for themself Ely’s famous gardens.

Venue Features
The Scene:
The gardens at Meadowburn represent an important story in America’s horticultural narrative. They are the living legacy of Ely, which she personally and independently designed over a 40-year period. They are the physical expression of Ely’s widely read and imitated garden philosophy, and the living laboratory in which she developed practical expertise. Details of the gardens reveal Ely’s personal interests, experience, individuality, autonomy, and the conviction with which she pursued her design vision. Her work captured the zeitgeist of her time vis à vis women’s roles in the household and home gardens.
Design:
Meadowburn was one of the most well-known gardens in America in its time and served as a model for gardens throughout the country. Today, it may be the last remaining personal garden created by a founding member of the Garden Club of America.
Standout Venue Features:
The gardens and surrounding picturesque countryside also make Meadowburn a beautiful setting for weddings, private parties, and conferences throughout the season. Furthermore, the unique heirloom perennials and shrubs that remain in the garden provide an exciting opportunity for producing Meadowburn heirloom plants and fresh cut flowers for sale. There are various houses on the property that guests have access to stay for the entire wedding weekend.
Awards & Notables Simply put, Ely was a pioneer. Her first book, A Woman’s Hardy Garden, offered practical horticultural advice for novice gardeners in a manner that was accessible and personal. It advocated for the wellbeing for women to be gained from the physical activity of gardening and celebrated the simplicity of old-fashioned perennials. It was hailed as the most influential garden book of its day for beginning gardeners. Ely’s work was recognized by her contemporaries—and now by present-day historians—as the catalyst that shifted the trend in American home gardens from Victorian “bedding out” of annuals to “hardy gardening.”

Blossoming Blooms & Secret Garden
REPORTER: Cortnie Fausner

This historical homestead is the perfect setting for your own storied soiree. Overflowing with blossoming blooms, fragrant florals and lush landscaping it all started back in the 1700's as a family estate, later purchased by two sisters and once-upon-a-time owned by a renowned gardner. Magical Meadowburn farm was even given as a wedding gift, you certainly don't hear of gifts like that nowadays. Is there anything more romantic than walking down the aisle on an estate that was once given as such a romantic gesture?! To sum it up, Meadowburn has certainly been enjoyed by many loving owners and is ready for you to add another chapter to it's history book.
