Venue Setting

Welcome to The Albion Schoolhouse, a legendary property on the stunning Mendocino coast.  Constructed in 1924, this 5,000 sqare foot grammar school served the town's schoolchildren and community until 1995 when it was purchased by hit record producer William Bottrell who spent 20 years lovingly restoring and renovating it. On two private acres, this open country expanse is the perfect place for ceremonies, dining, and photos. The ocean views, open sky, and wooded surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for a myriad of event opportunities.  

Inside there are 3 bedrooms and 2 huge gathering spaces: The Central Room (Library & Stage) and the Kitchen/Dining Room.

The Central Room provides guests with a space for dancing, dining, toasting, and celebrating and is equipped with a top of the line sound and light systems for DJs and live bands. The Kitchen/Dining Room with a 48" Wolf Range, Nakashima dining table, custom fireplace, and copper bar, is the perfect setting for professional catering and private chefs. Enjoy the ocean views from the windows,  and stargaze from the front deck. 

The Master Suite is not only a beautiful 800 sq. ft. bedroom, but it can also effortlessly transform into the perfect space for dining, dancing, and performances.

The sea foam green tiles and 1940's fixtures create an elegant ambiance for brides or grooms to prepare for their big day with ample space for hair, makeup, and general pampering.  These are the most beautiful bathrooms you've ever used!

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean on two private acres, The Albion Schoolhouse offers an unforgettable experience for you and yours. Mendocino is a magical destination with glorious views and everything an event desires: excellent caterers, bartenders, and experienced staff who will ensure that your wedding is an occasion that you will enjoy without concern for all the logistics. There are various indoor and outdoor spaces to meet your needs! Enjoy drinks and appetizers by the custom built fireplace, or on the deck (where you will likely spot deer and the neighboring llamas). Dine beneath the big Mendocino sky or drenched in natural light indoors. A stage beckons you and your live band, as does the large dance floor! For quiet conversation, meet on the wrap-around decks, the fire pit, or in the secret gardens and star gaze to the sound of breaking waves. At The Albion Schoolhouse your family and friends will find themselves relaxing and joyous in this unpretentious, comfortable, and very unique home.
Design:
Designed for the 21st century visitor who appreciates down-to-earth charm and retro elegance, the interior design and architecture blends Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, and mid-century modern with skylights. You'll find the the original (1924) fir flooring, school doors, radiators, redwood paneling with elegant wainscotting running throughout the building. The ceilings are wood paneled and the height is double the ordinary. The long lines throughout The Schoolhouse create a soothing zen like calm inside The Schoolhouse.

When renovating The Schoolhouse, Bottrell added a beautiful copper roof and in the Central Room he installed a large skylight and cupola. The Kitchen/Dining area boasts a gorgeous Nakashima table which comfortably seats 12, a custom built fire place and copper counter tops that overlook the Ocean. The lighting in The Schoolhouse was designed with care and at night The Schoolhouse takes on a sexy, warm vibe with copper overhead and amber side lighting throughout. Bottrell also restored the Girl's and Boy's bathrooms with sea green tiling from the 1940s and installed top of the line, 1940s style fixtures (sinks, toilets, showers). Recently the new owners (Justine Shapiro and Sydney Mintz) have created a chef's kitchen installing a 48" Wolf Range and refurbishing the cabinetry and acquiring all new appliances. They have purchased new FloBed mattresses for the 3 bedrooms.

The Albion Schoolhouse is legendary on the Mendocino Coast. For over 20 years this building was restored and renovated by William Bottrell, a successful music producer (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crowe) who moved his family from Hollywood to Mendocino in 1995. With the vision of an artist, the skill of an engineer, and the standards of an exacting producer Bottrell lovingly turned what was a very cool but dilapitated building into a one of a kind home, taking care to enhance the building so that it's original charm and architectural features remained intact.
