Venue Setting

The Drake Hotel is a cultural, entertainment and hospitality landmark in Toronto. Ever since we opened our doors on Valentine’s Day 2004, Drake has come to be known as an energetic hub for visual + performance art as well as dining and hospitality. We’re known for providing one of Canada’s most unique and sought after hotel and culinary experiences. As you can tell, we’re clearly more than a place to eat and sleep: we are a Hotbed for Culture. With a building that dates back to 1890, we've got a lot of history! The Drake first opened as D.A. Small’s Hotel and went through several owners and names like Hotel Cecil and The Stardust Inn. In 1949 Michael Lundy bought the property, renamed it The Drake and made several improvements that you can see today- like our famous grand staircase in our front Lobby. The current ownership purchased the property in late 2001 and undertook nearly three years of extensive renovations, dramatically enhancing the existing beautiful cultural and architectural elements that have given way to Drake’s current look. The Drake Hotel re-opened its doors in February of 2004 and has since gone on to proudly redefine the Toronto boutique hotel experience, creating our own version of a downtown urban retreat where travelers, culture seekers and neighbours all happily intersect to enjoy the thoughtful contradictions of high and low, new and old. We don’t take ourselves too seriously but we are serious about design! Our style has evolved to become forward thinking while being nostalgically influenced. Staying true to all things Drake, we’re excited about extending our cultural mandate to our new outpost, Drake Devonshire Inn, now open in Wellington, Ontario. The art, food and wine happenings that currently exist in Prince Edward County, as well as our beautiful historic Inn literally hovering over Lake Ontario made the choice to join another incredible community an easy one. With significant refurbishment and expansion alongside seasonal menus, cultural programs, inspiring excursions and a thoughtfully curated permanent art collection, Drake Devonshire will truly be a Drake outpost, Inn the County! From live music in the Underground, to award winning cocktails on our climate defiant, year round Sky Yard roof-top patio; from ongoing art exhibits and yummy eats, there's always something happening at Drake!

Accommodations
It's true, we've officially been named boutique chic by Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards but we'd also like you to think of us as your Toronto home away from home. We are the definition of a boutique hotel with 19 rooms and affectionately refer to our differently sized rooms as Crash Pads, Dens, Salons and our Suite. They are all contemporary, cozy, petite and each one is unique! Crash Pads are great for those who literally just want to crash after a night of Drake excitement, while Salons and Dens have more room for playing in. Our one and only Suite is big enough to host a pre-drinks party yet homey, with its own mid-century inspired living area. Every room is outfitted with a contemporary glass shower, original artwork, custom millwork, hardwood floors, tasty treats and, of course, a handmade doll. Each space has its very own personality and we’ve been told that sleeping with Drake inspires good dreams and unplanned adventures! Want to find out more? Give us a call anytime; we can talk hotel stuff all day long!

Design:
The Drake opened in 1890 as D. A. Small’s Hotel. At the time, the area was a major Canadian Pacific Railway hub that linked downtown with the lakeside summer homes of Toronto’s western beaches. For the next half century, the Hotel transitioned through several owners and names including Hotel Cecil and the Stardust. In 1949, Michael Lundy purchased the property, renamed it the Drake, expanded the building and created many of the improvements visible today, including the grand staircase in the lobby and the addition of a lounge and restaurant. The current owner purchased the property in late 2001 and undertook the extensive renovations that gave the hotel its current form. The Drake re-opened its doors in February of 2004 and has since gone on to proudly redefine the Toronto boutique hotel experience.
