The Grand Lodge
Venue Setting
Once a boar hunting lodge, the parkland around this Tuscan villa is over 1,000 years old. Between the ancient trees and woodland, you’ll find a Roman-style swimming pool and lemon groves. The old stone chapel in the grounds is now a fabulous bedroom by the poolside and the main villa is centred around a 17th-century courtyard fountain the size of a swimming pool. Outdoor dining at a long, wrought-iron table is taken by the trickle of the fountain, and there’s a built-in outdoor kitchen for long, lazy barbecue lunches. Heading inside, you still get the feeling that this place could be the country retreat of the aristocracy. Multiple lounges and drawing rooms allow the group to spread out in lavish surrounds – in the vaulted room around the fireplace as the maestro of the group tinkles away on the electric grand piano, or perhaps in the plush chandeliered room filled with marble busts. There’s a full taverna-style recreational area too with a pool table and bar-style seating for card games or a sociable tipple. Dining beneath crystalline chandeliers in the banquet-sized room is pure 18th-century opulence, and a private chef is included, providing breakfast and either lunch or dinner each day. Pair it with something from the wine library, featuring a deluxe selection of Tuscan and Italian wines. You’re on the outskirts of Lucca here, with the charming medieval city just 7km away to stock up on groceries and explore the meandering old streets.
