- The Scene:
- Chipping Campden is one of the least spoilt and most original of all the Cotswold market towns. The town was established in the 7th century and derives its name from the Saxon ‘Campa-denu’ or ‘Campadene’, meaning a valley with fields or cultivated land. It gained the prefix ‘Chipping’ from the old English ‘Ceping’ meaning a market place. The town was built largely on agricultural wealth (sheep and wool), and the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900s.
The town was designated a conservation area in 1970, and is the start and finish of the famous Cotswold Way, a 100 mile hike across some of England’s most beautiful countryside. - Design:
- The Kings Hotel is a beautiful 16th & 18th century listed building. It has been a coaching inn and hotel since 1935 and prior to this, a private house. The building still retains many of the original features.
