The Bush meets Lake St Clair
REPORTER: Jake Kilroy

The story of Pumphouse Point starts loooooooong ago (with maybe even more Os). In fact, according to the staff, the real story starts 20,000 years ago, when Australia’s deepest lake, Lake St. Clair, was born on the island of Tasmania. That’s how much of a feature the scenery is for the lakeside hotel.

'Oh Beeeehaaaave!' You know the infamous line belted out with a glorious accent by Mike Meyers in Austin Powers. Well now's your chance. An Australian hotel group has turned reviewing on its head. Its staff has been given the power to praise or shame a customer's lodging behavior. The Art Series Hotel Group  has launched a campaign to gain better guests.

Websites like TripAdvisor and Yelp have made it easy for patrons to grade accommodations, amenities, customer service and food, but there was no forum for members of the hospitality industry to speak back out about YOU - until now.

NEW VENUE ALERT!: This beauty opened in September 2013 - We fell in love the minute we came across Orchard Keepers, "nestled between the vines and orchards" and even more in love after chatting with Poss, the owner. She emailed us back straight away and couldn't have been more excited to share the scoop on this property that she herself has lovingly restored. When our team of reporters chats with venue owners who are both pleasant and passionate, we automatically know that throwing an event here will be a breeze. With over 40 years of event planning under our belts, we know how important the venue is, but even more importantly are the people behind the venue.

HISTORY LESSON: Under the shade of a giant Sequoia tree (an extremely rare tree in Australia that was brought over on a boat from the US as a seedling) and amongst beautiful gardens you will find Orchard Keepers. This family establishment is surrounded by neighboring vineyards and orchards. Poss will happily greet you and open her cottage doors where you will be invited to enjoy three historic cottages and 10 acres in the heart of Red Hill. The cottages date back to the late 1890’s and providing the perfect “rustic – luxury” accommodations.

HOW WILL MY GUESTS GET HERE?: Orchard Keepers can be found at 17 Paringa Road Red Hill South on the Mornington Peninsula: 50 minutes away from Melbourne CBD 90 minutes from Melbourne Domestic & International Airport. The property is easily reached along either the Eastern Freeway & Peninsula Link or the scenic coastal road hugging Port Phillip Bay

The Report

Our Venue Reporters love a good Hotel-as-Home venue. When we spoke with Anna about The Ellerman House and she sent us the information about the venue, we may have immediately looked up flights to South Africa. We at The Venue Report love nothing more than a sprawling pedicured lawn overlooking the ocean. The combo of grassy green meets sparkling sea is pretty darn ideal for celebrations. On top of this magic, the fine folks at Ellerman House just HAD to throw in the black and white striped lounge chairs.. Again, a fave combo. We are officially razzled and dazzled.

Located in Bantry Bay, Cape Town. The philosophy of Ellerman House is to share the best of South African culture with its guests through art, wine, dining, and gracious hospitality. The hotel has South African works of art dating from the 1800s to works from today’s rising artists housed in a separate Contemporary Gallery. Ellerman House also has launched their Wine Gallery to showcase their ,500-bottle collection of South African Wines.  HISTORY LESSON: Once the stately home of Sir John and Lady Ellerman, distinguished shipping magnates and investors, Ellerman House sits perched on the slopes of Lion’s Head. The elegant Cape Edwardian mansion is known for having one of the most spectacular ocean views in South Africa. Just ten minutes from the heart of Cape Town, the one-and-a-half acre property features a panorama of Atlantic coastline that includes the infamous Robben Island.

HOW WILL MY GUESTS GET HERE?: Easiest way is to fly into Cape Town International Airport; from there it is an easy 25-minute drive to Ellerman House.
