Venue Setting

Borgo Pignano is a 750 acre estate in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, perched in the middle of the topographical triangle linking Siena, Florence and Pisa. The estate includes extensive kitchen gardens, fields, meadows, pools, small lakes, orchards, woodlands, waterfalls and a horse arena all reachable by footpath and full of pleasures for both adults and children. The villa contains fourteen guest suites and rooms furnished with antiques, art, and fine Italian linens. Some rooms are adorned with frescoes. The bathrooms, which feature local marble and limestone, are artful and spacious. Surrounded by gardens, the villa has one of the most commanding views available in Tuscany. On clear days, the Mediterreanean - and a dark speck in the distance, the French island of Corsica – are visible. Near the villa are a collection of eighteenth century stone farmhouses that have been converted into charming apartments and ateliers. These include an artist’s studio, a two bedroom house overlooking a lake, and a larger house suitable for groups of over twenty.

Venue Features

The Scene:: Borgo Pignano is a country estate located on a prominent hill between the medieval towns of Volterra and San Gimignano, in the province of Pisa. The property consists of some three hundred hectares, about half of them under cultivation by strictly organic farming methods. We are gradually introducing biodynamic agriculture. Our dense woodlands furnish the sustainable fuel that heats the villa . Our fields of cereal grains, our two large gardens of herbs and vegetables, and our olive and fruit orchards supply much of the food that we serve our guests. The surrounding countryside is fretted by paths and lanes that invite long scenic walks, bike rides, and excursions on horseback. Active guests enjoy the three-hour hike, on an unpaved road, from Pignano to Volterra.
Design:: The borgo has grown out of a hamlet dating from Etruscan times and is tended by a group of friends committed to healthy living, biodynamic agriculture and sustainable energy who offer the gracious, bohemian hospitality of a well-run country house. The center of the Borgo is a sensitively restored villa with thirteenth century walls and ramparts and an eighteenth century manor house, originally built by an Italian landowner.
