The Lowdown Venue Setting
Opened in April 2013, S.Y. Kitchen offers fresh, modern Italian dishes in any of the three rooms of their Italian-inspired California farmhouse. Meals are served in the Front Room where guests are warmly welcomed, on the Porch with cushioned banquette seating and a bit of fresh air, or in the cozy Dining Room which also hosts family seating and private parties.
The recently opened Courtyard was designed to create an outdoor lounge area for pre-dinner cocktails or to enjoy the restaurant’s complete menu. Rustic wooden cocktail-style tables nestle between cushioned seats which can be arranged and rearranged for couples or larger groups up to 20. Heaters, blankets and soft tree lights combine to create an intimate evening.
S.Y. KITCHEN is happy to cater events from intimate at-home dinners, business meetings and wine tastings, to all special life-celebrating events. We will bring you meals right off our menu or we will have you work with Chef Luca Crestanelli to design the dining experience you want.

After years of treating the valley as a second home, Kathie and Mike Gordon—owners of the 25-year-old Brentwood eatery Toscana—decided to open S.Y. Kitchen Cucina Rustica along with Italian-born chef Luca Crestanelli last year. “We all believed the valley was ripe for something new,” says Kathie. “When we found the right place at the right time, well, what choice did we have?” There—in the front room, dining room, or porch of the charming farmhouse—diners can spend the evening lingering over warm octopus salad with leek, potatoes, taggiasca olives, and green beans followed by a wood-fired pizza or hearty dish of wild mushroom pappardelle with thyme and parmigiano, paired with a bottle of Italian or local wine, of course. Bars & Lounges:
Emily Johnston left for Italy to study as a sommelier at ALMA Scuola Internazionale di Cucina’s Wine Academy. Not only did she receive the highest academic honors in her class, a feat in itself, but challenged her fluency as well, as it was taught only in Italian. She became a Certified Sommelier with the Associazione Italiana Sommeliers (AIS) in 2011 while working alongside AIS Master Sommelier, Roberto Jacquemod Pane. Emily became Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2014 and is now currently studying to achieve the Advanced level sommelier.
Johnston is now Wine Director/Sommelier for the Toscana Restaurant Group. Her vision in her words for S.Y. Kitchen’s wine program; “I appreciate that the world of wine is vast and I want to make that world seem smaller with a concise wine program featuring my favorite Italian wines and local gems from my native Santa Barbara County. I want my selections to be both familiar and new to illustrate the inspiring nature of well-crafted wine.” THIS VENUE DOES NOT HAVE ANY REPORTS AT THIS TIME. Check back again soon!
