You Can Stay at This Former Bunker That Is Now a Luxury B&B

Need a total respite from the workaday world? This recently opened, visually stunning and perfectly restful bed-and-breakfast is a welcome remedy for all your work-weary woes. The Bunkers will instantly transport you to a calm, spacious state of mind with its rustic-meets-high-design aesthetic and expansive surrounding landscape. In fact, you’ll feel like you’ve landed in the middle of the Belgian countryside (which indeed you have), although you’re still just a mere 15-minute drive from beautiful and buzzy Bruges (and other towns you’ve probably never heard of but will love). Take it from us: book a room here—or the whole house—and have the best of both worlds in this subtly luxurious, inviting and historical escape.

Historical Heritage

Why “The Bunkers,” you might ask—great question. The property has its own unique heritage of being a rural estate that dates back to 1785, originally built as a fort to protect a nearby lock. During WWI and WWII, the Germans took over the fort and the 5 low-lying bunkers that dot the grounds are a testament to the past. However, the bunkers today have taken on new purpose by housing the property’s chickens, bees and sheep. Hence, you’ll be breakfasting on fresh eggs, in-house honey and dining with a spectacular view of the encircling fields.

Stone-hewn Sophistication

Though currently owned and run by a lovely Belgian family who live on the property, The Bunkers can be rented out on a single room basis or as an entire unit—and trust us, you may want the whole place to yourself. As a bed-and-breakfast guest, you’ll have the benefit of a large daily breakfast buffet, although rest and privacy are king here, so you’ll largely be left to your own devices. With five uniquely cozy bedrooms each designed around the view, raw natural materials are married with the soft comforts of luxurious bedding, simple modern furnishings and lavish amenities. Reflecting the make-up of the namesake bunkers, you’ll find stone-speckled and surprisingly sophisticated concrete used throughout the house as a unifying theme (also surfacing in the exterior cobblestone walls)—from the stairs, to side-tables to the exquisite kitchen counter. Speaking of which, design junkies and cooking enthusiasts will know what we mean when we hail the merits of the chic and clean Vipp kitchen, stocked and ready for all your personal culinary endeavors.

Rustically Refined and Restful

Beyond just the bedrooms themselves and the standout kitchen, there’s much to up your serenity levels here. In addition to the peaceful living room and gorgeous gathering spaces, you’ll have full access to a heated swimming pool (flanked by a gigantic wall of windows), an infrared sauna, a heated terrace, an entertainment room and fitness area. If all that isn’t enough to keep you occupied, The Bunkers are located just a short distance from the beach, hotspot restaurants and plenty of places to shop.

Bring The Whole Crew

The Bunkers caters to more than just overnight guests and group getaways. This is the ideal spot to book a memorable company event, private dinner, relaxing retreat, wedding reception or out-of-the-ordinary business meeting. Corporate brainstorm followed by a swim and a sauna, anyone?
