Venue Setting

"Playa Viva is a luxury sustainable boutique hotel with eight rooms on one mile of pristine beach on the Pacific coast of Mexico, very private and secluded yet only a 30-minute drive from Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa International airport (ZIH. It is located on 200 acres, 85% of which are in a Private Nature Reserve, and includes a turtle sanctuary, archaeological site, permaculture farm, forest restoration, estuary, 1.3 kilometers of beach front and much more. The resort is designed to provide an environment that will broaden your perspective, open your heart and remind you of the interconnection between all living things. Playa Viva provides all the luxury with none of the guilt, operating on 100% solar power, solar thermal water heating, grey and black water management systems and was built with local materials and craftsmanship. All rooms have ocean views, open-air construction using traditional techniques for constant ocean breezes, and are decorated with local materials to the highest standard of artistic craftsmanship. The resort specializes in farm to table cuisine, growing or sourcing locally much of its own food, and can specialize in handling a wide variety of dietary concerns from vegetarian and vegan to many types of allergies. Much of the food is organic, and all of it prepared and served with love. Meals are eaten family style and the resort’s common areas are designed to encourage connection with your fellow guests, while also providing plenty of private spaces for you to quietly enjoy. The property also hosts a sea turtle sanctuary run exclusively by local volunteers. Guests may sometimes accompany volunteers on their trips to monitor the beach for new nests, and volunteers regularly bring the newly hatched baby turtles to the property for guests to participate in the hatchlings’ transition to their ocean home. Playa Viva also offers fun and interesting excursions – from tours of the town’s salt farm and coconut candy factory, to surfing, scuba diving and sport fishing, to an unforgettable trip to an organic coffee and cocoa family farm high in the Sierra Madre del Sur rising behind Playa Viva to the east. Playa Viva is committed to preserving the cultures, traditions, communities, species and habitats that make this planet worth exploring; to a living social, economic and environmental legacy. Discover more about yourself, and the world, at Playa Viva."

The Original Treehouse is a favorite due to it's status as a social media icon, yet the New Treehouses are stunning (they are basically two bedroom suites that will make you not want to ever leave your room).

Design:
Playa Viva features it's iconic treehouses. The origional 5 rooms was designed by notable Mexico architect Michel Lewis and featured by Autodesk as a notable green building design. The Original Treehouse was designed by Kimshasa Baldwin of Deture Culsign along with the common area expansion. The new treehouses were designed by the firm Nomadic Atelier. It features locally and sustainably harvested woods, natural pigments used as paints/wall coverings, palapa style thatched roof huts, bamboo and other locally harvested building materials to create a natural setting that has been described by Whole Living Magazine as "Stunning." Playa Viva combines the best of eco and luxury to create the perfect balance of EcoLuxury including 100% off grid solar with plenty of power to go around, all hot water for showers is heated by the sun and then runs off to feed the nearby gardens. All details of sustainability are carefully planned to move beyond green, beyond sustainable to regenerative.
Standout venue features:
The Treehouses, the Yoga Shala (event space), miles of private and unspoiled beachfront, the turtle sanctuary and onsite farm are all standout features for guests here at Playa Viva.

25 Eco-Woke Hotels, Restaurants & Cities Around the World
Tom Robbins said it best when he wrote; “I've sucked way too much cement for this year. Bad juju rising off them city sidewalks. I need to babble with a brook or two, inhale starlight, make friends with some trees.” Most days, we couldn’t agree more, but Earth Day makes that desire even more palpable. What to do? Explore, of course. We must get outdoors and soak up the feeling of dirt between our toes. Here are a few of our favorite spots around the world that are eco-woke. From hotels made with sustainable building practices to restaurants serving hyper-local foods to cities that are setting a new standard in what it means to go green, we’ve got the Earth on our inquisitive minds.
