Venue Setting

A countryside getaway tucked into the rolling hills, and towering redwoods of Anderson Valley, The Land offers retreats in a health-forward environment that encourage connection not only amongst peers but with nature as well. A few days’ stay on the Land is something unexpected. Rustic, but refined, electric, but quiet in nature. It's a place where everyone can come and experience the power of connection and empathy in a fun and talented community. Coming with a young group of facilitators and great food, the Land offers curated experiences and trainings, hiking in the redwoods, yoga on the lawns, farm-to-table cooking classes and swimming in the river. There are accommodations for up to 200 people in a mix of cabins, cottages and glamping tents, with most groups averaging 35-100 people.

The Land is a response to the suggestion that our purpose in life is to create connection, and when we do, great things emerge, both in our lives, in our teams, and in our communities. There’s both poetry and action to the experience of staying on the Land. It’s interacting with nature, not trying to live on top of it. Hence there’s an essential quality to each retreat, each group, and each offsite that is special and unique.

The Land has been a best kept secret for seekers, stars, wedding couples, and companies like Soulcycle, Louis Vuitton, UCSF,  Giphy, Asana, Global Village, and Samasource for the last two years. It is a fast rising star in the destination world.

The Scene:

The Land is162 acres of California wilderness with winding rivers, swimming holes, towering redwoods, rustic forest cabins, glamping tents, and more. A place where stars can come and not be seen, where individuals come to find inspiration and genius, and where groups  find out what happens when they actually get connected.

Historically, the Land has been a sanctuary for people to gather, break bread, and create community. The Native American Pomo Tribe was there, it was home to one of the first ecologically sound summer camps for the Jewish community in SF, a private retreat for a philanthropist, and later a retreat center attracting renowned teachers like Ram Dass and Rodney Yee.

The Land exists somewhere in between all those things. It's a community of thinkers, artists, and life hackers. It's a retreat center that teaches yoga, meditation, and has established a compelling offering perfect for maverick companies willing to try new ways to get their teams working together in a more connected and cohesive fashion. Companies like Soulcycle, Samasource, Louis Vuitton, and Asana have all sent their teams to the Land.

From cooking classes and harvesting produce from our 5 acre garden, the Land offers hands-on experiences that break the patterns that tend to mute life in the city. The Land is designed to be more a co-creative experience than a resort — It is a lifestyle that emerges when you practice a set of principles that allow for intimacy with life.

The Land has 90, mostly Queen Beds in 18 cabins, 12 seasonal glamping tents and 8 houses to accommodate your group. We specialize in groups from 20-60 persons, and can scale up our glamping tents to accommodate groups up to 250.

The historic lodge was constructed from one redwood on the property in the 1950’s.

The Land has a 118 year old history starting with weekend cabin rentals, a gambling saloon, one of the first organic farms in the valley, a Jewish boys camp, a famous retreat center frequented by Ram Dass, zen buddhists and the Findhorn of Scotland.

One of our favorite houses is Strawbale. It was the first load-bearing Strawbale house permitted in the state of California, and we recently remodeled the interior. It’s magical.

The cabins, houses have all been remodeled with well-appointed detail, and contemporary sensibilites. The bedding is warm and inviting, and the glamping tents new.

The headwaters of the Navarro River begin on our property and extend all the way to the Pacific ocean.

There are over 50 species of birds that call the Land home, including occasional visits by a Bald Eagle.

    Standout Venue Features:
Historic trees of up to 1000-years old dot the property, with the renowned Redwood Grove in Hendy Woods State Park, accessible from The Land by trail. The headwaters of the Navarro River is a significant feature of The Land experience. Bordering the property for thousands of feet with the Rancheria, Anderson and Indian creek tributaries in close proximity to the property makes for great swimming holes and river walks. The miles of forested trails are great for hiking and exploring.

Designed and established with the guidance of the Findhorn mystics, and the local Daily Bread landscape team, The Land’s 5 acre garden is a popular wedding ceremony location, and a wonderful place for teaching and demonstration.

    The Food!

While calling The Land an eco-retreat might be going too far, our decisions are always guided by our imperative of being responsible stewards of the land and good neighbors. We’ve always loved old buildings and old things, and like to think these objects possess a spirit of the past and that history has some weight and substance. Secondly, it just makes sense from several perspectives to reuse our resources whenever possible. Most of the buildings at The Land are old.

The fields and grounds are managed for the 50 species of birds, the deer, wild turkey (we have quite a few), wildflowers and the natural faun and flora on the Land.

We realize there is a long way to go and many efforts we can make, and we do believe we are headed in the right direction

The redwood forests of Northern California set a stunning backdrop for any event at The Land, but it was especially perfect for this couple’s earthy, natural wedding. Set in the countryside of Mendocino County, this sprawling venue includes rolling hills and pastures, forests and orchards, rivers and swimming holes. It’s the kind of place where a diverse sampling of Northern California terrain can be traversed by never even leaving the property. For this particular wedding, that was a great point of difference, as the couple and their guests were traveling from across the country to enjoy a relaxing, nature centric weekend retreat with wellness as a central focus. The Land is known for creating weekend experiences with a holistic, nurturing approach that includes exploring the natural sanctuary and taking nourishment in the form of daily farm-to-table meals as well as abstaining from alcohol to instead enjoying expertly crafted drinks made with shrubs, elixirs and herbs from the garden (the sparkling rose water sounds like a glass full of bubbly magic!).

We recently caught up with photographer Alex of Love Tribe Weddings to get the full scoop behind this gorgeous day. From the abundant selection of hearty, organic foods to the glamping-style overnight stays, this wedding sounds like an adventure, a festival and a celebration of love all wrapped into one awesome weekend.
